A day in the life of an intern in Merida Mexico

Ever since I had made the decision to come to Mexico there was always a big question that I couldn’t answer “ What are you going to be doing in Mexico? I knew that being prepared to teach and to help others was the best way I could prepare but other than that we had no actual idea what we would be doing. I was surprised to find out how much of that was true and that I truly had no idea what we were doing. To answer that question a day in the life of an intern in Mexico goes just like this- We begin the day to a famous Taylor swift song about narcissist at exactly 7:30 each day, we eat breakfast each day with our host that come from Venezuela and Yucatan culture. Soon after we head out early in the morning to walk all the way across downtown, crossing the markets, and smelling the air of Cochinta. After a long walk, we usually wait about ten minutes to take a Comvi which will take us to our final destination. Throughout the morning we remain mostly quiet seeing as the next couple hours will be filled lots of kids to teach. AS soon as we arrive we head right into it. We teach mostly English with a few public health topics to kids of around 6-12 years of age. We love being able to spend time with the kids and seeing how enthusiastic they get about learning something new. Around twelve we make the long journey back to the house which normally takes around 1 hour because of the busier streets of the afternoon. Soon after we become aquatinted once again with the host of the home who cooks a welcome home lunch. Which quite indeed is the best meal of the day because it's not to cold and its not to hot outside but just perfect. The reason for that is because around 2 the weather fills the air with humidity and heat all combined together at its max point of the day. We try to hide out either in Starbucks to get caught up on some homework, or we head out to the hostel to meet some Europeans traveling the world and hanging out at the hostel. Both only cost us about 20- 30 pesos a day and we are able to enjoy and collaborate with the other students as well about their internships. While that continues on till the evening, we soon make a group a decision to head to the final meal of the day. Finding dinner in Merida is as easy as making a quesadilla at home. Most of it pretty basic tacos and beans and around the cost of 100 pesos. This allows us to have a variety of places to explore and catch a glimpse of the culture in Merida. We always love the opportunity to hear the music and the sounds of Marquestas being made in the streets. Anyways, the point being is if you ever get the opportunity to serve those in Merida, don’t have an expectation of the changes you’ll make or what you’ll do. Because best of all Merida will change you. It will help you see what your weakness and strengths are, and will push you to use those in order to help others. You’ll forget all about yourself and that’s the greatest gift to receive as we discover our purpose here as students.
